Kayak the
Lake Tahoe Area
Lake Tahoe Paddling Guide
Looking for a smaller puddle to dip your paddle in? The Tahoe area is home to several stunning mid-sized lakes, beginner-friendly river trips, and a plethora of lakeside dining options. And since Lake Tahoe often feels like the main attraction, you’re likely to begin exploring these lesser-known bodies when the big pool’s winds and waves aren’t feeling quite right. However, after a few afternoons on these smaller lakes, I hope you’ll come to appreciate each as its own destination, with its unique quirks and charms.
Let’s roll out that virtual map and explore some of my favorite paddles together:
Silver Lake (Kirkwood)
An idyllic alpine lake with something for everyone, Silver Lake is both a worthy destination on its own AND your best alternative to Tahoe on windy days
Fallen Leaf Lake
Surround yourself with dramatic Sierra scenery (and none of the crowds) just outside of South Lake
Serene Lakes
Cruise through mirror-like waters and camp-y environs in this high-elevation community
Donner Lake
Warmer waters and lower winds make Donner a better bet for swing-season paddles and family ventures on the North Shore
Watson Lake
An easy choice for families looking to test gear or get young kids out on the water for the first time
Truckee River (Tahoe City to River Ranch)
This gentle river journey can be a bit of a booze cruise on a sunny summer afternoon – or come early for a more family-friend vibe
Truckee River (Downtown Truckee to Glenshire)
Conquer class-2 rapids as you race through town on this slightly more adventurous section of the Truckee
