Kayaking Sardine Lake

Take in the towering Sierra Buttes above Sardine Lake’s shores and bathe at the base of a waterfall only accessible by boat, in the Gold Lakes region

About Upper & Lower Sardine Lakes

Craggy peaks. Abundant fishing. Private waterfalls. Upper Sardine Lake has it all – and could be your perfect first stop on the Gold Lakes Highway.

The Sierra Buttes rise just beyond Sardine’s southwestern edge and an explosion of wildflowers teem from its shores. You won’t get a ton of exercise from this paddle, but that’s hardly the point. Head straight across the lake from your launch point to a rugged, narrow, trail to reach a rushing waterfall – and one of the best picnic spots you’ll find all season. You’ll discover a natural swimming hole with just enough space for your group to relax and refresh.

Fishing is the biggest draw at Sardine Lakes and you’ll be in good company if you choose to test your luck with a rod and reel. Lower Sardine Lake is a designated premium fishing lake, re-stocked with Rainbow Trout throughout the summer. To keep these fisher-folk happy, swimming is not permitted in Lower Sardine Lake. When you’re ready to cool off, wander over to Upper Sardine Lake or Sand Pond.

Sardine Lake Resort rents cabins, row boats, and motor boats, if that’s your jam. They maintain a 5 mph speed limit, keeping things smooth for boating.

Are you excited about wildlife? I know I am! While you’re likely here for those dramatic Sierra Buttes views, don’t forget to take in the smaller details. I watched a Bald Eagle circle above me, dive for its super, and depart unsuccessfully. I also spotted dozens of tadpoles and fish along the lake’s edge.

For a leisurely day with awe-inspiring views, get ready for Sardine Lakes.
