Kayaking Silver Lake

An idyllic alpine lake with something for everyone, Silver Lake is both a worthy destination on its own AND your best alternative to Tahoe on windy days

About Silver Lake (Kirkwood)

Stunning and accessible, Silver Lake is everything a High Sierra Lake should be. Kayaking Silver, you’re surrounded on all sides by rocky, forested slopes, punctuated with a few quiet camps. The lake is just shallow enough along its edges to offer mild swimming holes and feels like just the right size for your day’s activity. Treasure Island – positioned in the center of Silver Lake – is bigger than most lake islands and fun to circumnavigate and explore.

Note: Silver Lake is a popular place name. California is home to several. If you’re near Kirkwood and South Lake Tahoe, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re off 395 in the Central Sierra, you can learn more about California’s other (equally beautiful) Silver Lake here.

A Very 2020 Kayaking Story

This lake is extra-special to me, because it was the first I paddled in my own kayak. I was living on the north shore of Lake Tahoe at the time, and my boyfriend and I had been waiting for our inflatables to arrive in the mail. It felt like the whole world was running out of boats. (And mountain bikes. And puppies.) Through an afternoon of internet research and phone calls, we had snagged the last two. We waited a few days past the anticipated delivery time, couldn’t figure out why our tracking app kept noting “will be delivered today,” literally chased down the UPS truck to troubleshoot, and eventually found ourselves at the South Lake Tahoe sorting center. They were understaffed but incredibly helpful in digging through dusty warehouse corners to find our missing prize.

“It’s been happening a lot lately,” they warned.

Finally, we had what we needed. We set off on our way.

We drove a little ways south towards Kirkwood and found a dispersed campsite off Blue Lakes Road. We had intended to find an established campground, but all were still closed. We enjoyed our evening together along a small, private stream. And in the morning, we were off to test our new kayaks.

We arrived at Silver Lake around 11am. The parking areas were overflowing. Should we have been surprised? Probably not. Driving 45 minutes south from South Lake Tahoe, we felt like we were entering a more remote area. But, we realized, we were still just under two hours from Sacramento, an easy day trip. To an outdoor area. In June of 2020.

We got it. We were there too, and we didn’t mind the company.

It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the put-in, but nothing unmanageable. When you reach the shore, it’s unlikely you’ll experience our 2020-level crowds – but you won’t be alone. Don’t worry about it. Most families visit Silver Lake to swim and fish and rarely venture far from the parking lot.

We unboxed our new inflatable kayaks, reviewed the instructions, and started pumping. It wasn’t bad. We knew we’d be pumping twice as fast by our second paddle.

We gazed out at Treasure Island and, not knowing its name, and decided this would be our destination. Our kayaks moved faster than we had expected and, after we followed the shoreline counterclockwise for a while, we became more confident that they wouldn’t pop or sink on us. We pointed towards the center of the lake. Treasure Island, it turned out, was the perfect size for a trip like ours. You can’t camp here, but it’s big enough to scramble around. Find your favorite picnic spot, and stake your claim. Bring a pirate flag, if you dare.

Silver Lake allows motor boats, but you won’t spot nearly as many as on Lake Tahoe. On the day we visited, only one group of tubers was traveling fast enough to create waves, and they weren’t frequent enough to chop up the water.

In short – Silver Lake is an idyllic spot. You’re going to want to visit here. It’s warm enough to swim, wide enough to explore, and allows you to “get away” fairly close to town.

Rent your kayak or SUP at Silver Lake Resort, Kit Carson Lodge, or Plasse’s Resort.

Silver Lake Camping

Traditionally, there are many camping options nearby. Silver Lake East, Silver Lake West, Lake of the Woods, private resorts, and more. Camping has also been allowed on public lands, like the spot we found off Blue Lake Road. However, while Silver Lake survived the Caldor Fire, much of the surrounded area was heavily impacted. I will update this page when I know more. In the meantime, you might consider camping closer to Lake Tahoe.

When to Go

Situated at 7,200 feet, this alpine environment isn’t the first to melt out. Inquire locally before setting out on your trip.

Build Your Silver Lake Lake Weekend

This area was home to many amazing hikes. However, I’m not sure how these fared in the Caldor Fire. Check back – I will update when I know more. In the meantime, consider a venture to South Lake Tahoe. On your way to South Lake, stop by locals-favorite Divided Sky in Meyers for toasted sandwiches and a pitcher of your favorite brew.

What's Next?

If you love this Silver Lake, you’ll love the other Silver Lake too. Instead of circumnavigating an island, a similar exploratory feel can be found when you travel up a slow moving stream at the other Silver Lake. Or, if you’re looking for another mid-sized granite-encircled lake, visit Fallen Leaf Lake or Gold Lake next. For the grandest views, check out Lake Tahoe.
